What
is a dildo?
Webster's' dictionary
defines dildo as 'an artificial substitute for an erect penis'. Female
worshippers of Priapus were expected to lose their virginity to a statue
of this well-endowed Greek god of procreation. Some statues had outsized
removable wooded penises that could be used as dildos Tipu Sahib, sultan
of Mysore from 1782-99, gave dildos to the 600 women of his harem to
stop them playing with each other. At the same time, European ladies
took to wearing a mulierre, a strip of rough fabric that passed between
the legs and fastened to a belt, stimulating the clitoris as they walked.
No wonder 18th century women loved their "constitutionals". A dildo
is a sex toy, usually made of latex or silicone (jelly dildo or dong),
which is inserted into some bodily orifice for sexual pleasure. They
come in a number of different shapes and sizes, all with one thing in
common: they are a substitute or symbol for a real penis. Many women
use a dildo as they enjoy the feeling of something hard and thrusting
inside them during masturbation. Many men, gay or otherwise, feel the
same way, using small (or as your tastes go, large) dildos for anal
stimulation.
What
should I look for in buying a dildo?
There are a
number of factors to consider including: length, thickness, hardness
and texture. It is strongly recommended that you look for a dildo with
a smooth surface made of a firm, but not too firm material. The two
most common materials for a dildo are silicone and latex. Silicone (jelly
dildo) is usually more expensive, but most people who use dildos regularly
agree that its qualities of matching body temperature and its general
texture make it the superior material. The most important thing to remember
is that you should start small. Buy a dildo that you *know* you can
probably handle, rather than one you hope to be able to handle. The
dildo is considered to be the most basic form of a sex toy since they
have no moving parts.
